Varenicline is sold as 0.5 mg and 1 mg tablets. Titrating the dose from 0.5 mg every day for 3 days to 0.5 mg twice daily for 4 days to 1 mg twice daily is recommended. The standard maintenance dose is 1 mg twice daily, with variations as permitted by the FDA. The FDA has approved its use for twelve weeks. If smoking cessation has been achieved it may be continued for another twelve weeks.
INDICATIONS:
CHAMPIX is indicated as an aid to smoking cessation treatment.

(CNW) UK Body Recommends Pfizer's Champix (varenicline) for Smokers
Smokers in the UK Should
Now Have Access to Champix
NEW YORK, May 30 /CNW/ - Pfizer Inc announced today that the National
Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the United
Kingdom has recommended Champix (varenicline) for use on the National
Health Service for adult smokers who have expressed a desire to quit.
This gives smokers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland access to
another important treatment option to help them quit smoking.
In its Final Appraisal Determination, NICE concluded that varenicline
was "superior to NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) and bupropion in
achieving continuous abstinence" and that its use in smoking cessation
was "likely to be a cost-effective use of National Health Service
resources."
"This guidance means that smokers who are serious about stopping have
another choice from a good range of clinically proven treatments, said
Professor Robert West, Professor of Health Psychology at University
College London. "Smokers who combine treatments with the right support -
for instance from smoking cessation services - could significantly
increase their odds of successfully quitting for life."
Champix is the first new prescription aid to smoking cessation treatment
in nearly a decade. Pfizer discovered and developed Champix specifically
as an aid to smoking cessation through its unique mechanism of action
targeting the specific receptor to which nicotine binds. Champix is
believed to work by reducing the severity of the smoker's urge to smoke.
"This guidance in the U.K. recognizes the efficacy and
cost-effectiveness of Champix, and encourages physicians and smokers to
consider this treatment as a new treatment option to help smokers quit
smoking," said Jack Watters, MD, Pfizer's Vice President of
International Medical Affairs. "The implications of this ruling are
particularly timely as they come just before World No Tobacco Day, when
organizations and governments around the world will work to implement
smoke-free policies, which may further encourage smokers to make a quit
attempt."
Smoking, the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, is
responsible for five million deaths worldwide each year. By 2010, the
World Health Organization estimates the annual global cost of
tobacco-related illness to be approximately US$500 billion.

Champix: Just Another Name For
Chantix
Are you aware of the fact that Champix is nothing but another name for
the FDA approved quit smoking drug Chantix? Well, only a certain section
of people around the world are acquainted with this fact and the other
half who are really ignorant of the relationship between Chantix and
Champix fall into utter perplexity when they get hold of Champix while
looking for the quit smoking medicine Chantix. So, to inform you the
real truth on Chantix as well as Champix, a couple of pointers are
mentioned below:
Varenicline Tartrate is the generic name of Chantix as well as Champix.
Intially, Pfizer selected Champix as a brand name for Varenicline
Tartrate but the Food and Drugs Administration, USA(FDA) rejected it
citing that the name Champix is “overly fanciful and overstates the
efficacy of the product” from the promotional point of view. As a
consequence Pfizer changed the name to Chantix, obtained FDA approval
for the drug on May 11,2006 and launched Chantix as an anti-smoking
medicine in US under the same name. But the brand name Champix for
Varenicline Tartrate was accepted by the European Commission a few
months after the launching of Chantix in the pharmaceutical market and
on September 29, 2006, the drug was relaunched as Champix in the
European countries. On 14 th January, 2007 Champix was made
available for sale as a prescription-based quit smoking medicine on the
Scotland National Health Service(NHS).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tobacco smoking is
the leading cause of premature death in developed countries.
Approximately half of all long-term smokers die prematurely due to
smoking-related health problems, and continuing smokers have a reduced
lifespan by an average of ten years. In contrast, individuals who quit
smoking by age 50 reduce their risk of dying in the following 15 years
by about one-half compared with those who continue to smoke.
Pfizer's Champix (Varenicline) is a new agent for smoking cessation with
a different mechanism of action than currently available medications.
What is CHAMPIX?
Varenicline is indicated for smoking cessation in persons eighteen years
of age and older.
How does CHAMPIX work?
It is a partial agonist that binds selectively and with greater affinity
than nicotine to alpha 4 beta 2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. It
produces an effect that relieves symptoms of withdrawal and craving, at
the same time, it prevents nicotine from binding to the receptor, thus
blocking the rewarding and reinforcing effects of smoking.
How effective CHAMPIX is?
Studies demonstrate that varenicline was superior to both placebo and
bupropion in short-term efficacy. Consistent benefit over placebo was
also shown in the long term (at week 52), whereas results were
inconsistent with respect to long-term efficacy against bupropion.
What are the adverse effects of CHAMPIX?
Varenicline was generally associated with mild to moderate adverse
events in clinical trials. Nausea was the most frequently reported
adverse reaction . It appears to be dose-dependent and usually decreases
with continued use. One study found a lower incidence of nausea when the
drug was titrated to target doses over a few days.
Other common adverse reactions reported with varenicline were vomiting,
constipation, flatulence, taste perversion, abnormal dreams, and sleep
disturbance.
Unlike bupropion SR and most nicotine products, varenicline does not
decrease weight gain associated with smoking cessation.
Are there any drug interactions with CHAMPIX?
No known clinically meaningful drug interactions have been identified
based on drug interaction studies between varenicline and digoxin,
warfarin, bupropion, cimetidine, or metformin. Concomitant therapy with
transdermal nicotine does not appear to affect nicotine
pharmacokinectics, however, the incidence of gastrointestinal (nausea,
vomiting, dyspepsia) and neurologic (headache, dizziness, fatigue)
symptoms was higher with the combination than with nicotine alone.
What is the recommended dosing for CHAMPIX?
It is recommended that varenicline be started one week prior to a
patient's target quit-smoking date, with the dose titrated to 1 mg twice
daily as follows:
Day 1-3: 0.5 mg once daily
Day 4-7: 0.5 mg twice daily
Day 8 through the end of week 12: 1.0 mg twice daily
Varenicline should be taken after a meal, with a full glass of water.
The medication, varenicline, with tradename ChantixTM (varenicline) in
the United States, received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval
as an aid to smoking cessation in May 2006.

Smoking cessation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
For My Name is Earl episode, see Quit Smoking (My Name Is Earl).
Smoking cessation (commonly known as quitting, or kicking the habit) is
the effort to stop smoking tobacco products. Nicotine is a
psychologically and physically addictive substance, and quitting smoking
is commonly considered to be difficult. Psychological and
pharmacological aids are available to help people quit smoking, although
success rates are relatively low. As part of the wider tobacco control
movement, there have been numerous advertising campaigns, smoking
restriction policies, tobacco taxes, and other strategies to encourage
people to quit smoking. Tobacco use is a major cause of death worldwide,
according to the World Health Organization.

Outline:
Smoking cessation services, which offer group or individual therapy can
help people who want to quit. Some smoking cessation programs employ a
combination of coaching, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral
therapy, and pharmacological counseling. Programmes in the UK are run by
the NHS, and use a clear and clinically tested protocol. However
evaluation of the NHS programme has shown disappointing outcomes.
Trials have shown that an effective method for quitting smoking is
cognitive behaviour therapy. For example, the QUIT FOR LIFE Programme
(David Marks, 1993, 2005) has produced quit rates that are 5-6 times
higher than quitting by willpower alone (Marks & Sykes, 2002).
One effective way to assist smokers who want to quit is through a
telephone quitline which is easily available to all. Professionally run
quitlines may help less addicted smokers but those more severely
addicted to cigarettes (ie anyone who smokes within half an hour of
waking) should seek out their local smoking cessation services, where
they exist, or assistance from a knowledgeable health professional,
where they do not. Evidence shows that best results are achieved when
support and medication are used simultaneously. Quitting with a group of
other people who want to quit is a proven method of getting support,
available through many organizations.
A serious commitment to arresting a dependency upon smoking nicotine is
essential. Medication, such as a nicotine replacement therapy product or
Wellbutrin (aka Zyban) have been clinically proven to double a quitter's
chances of stopping successfully versus placebo.
However, critics have drawn attention recently to the risks associated
with the administration of nicotine, a poison, to pregnant women and
adolescents (Ginzel et. al., 2007).
Although a significant proportion are successful, many people fail
several times. Many smokers find it difficult to quit, even in the face
of serious smoking-related disease in themselves or close family members
or friends.
Studies have concluded that those who do successfully quit smoking often
gain weight. "Weight gain is not likely to negate the health benefits of
smoking cessation, but its cosmetic effects may interfere with attempts
to quit." (Williamson, Madans et al, 1991) Therefore, drug companies
researching smoking-cessation medication often measure the weight of the
participants in the study.
Women and Smoking Cessation:
Major depression may influence smoking cessation in women. Quitting
smoking is especially difficult during certain phases of the
reproductive cycle, phases that have also been associated with greater
levels of dysphoria, and subgroups of women who have a high risk of
continuing to smoke also have a high risk of developing depression.
Since many women who are depressed may be less likely to seek formal
cessation treatment, practitioners have a unique opportunity to persuade
their patients to quit.

How Supportive Are You?
By Sandy Tonsing
Do you want your loved ones to quit smoking, your dad, mom, girl friend,
boy friend, friends and relatives to kick the butt and stay smoke free?
How helpful are you in helping them change their habit? Are you
supportive enough or are you the kind who knows only how to complain and
ridicule the smokers? If so it’s a high time you lend a helping hand and
change your “holier than thou” attitude. Time and again we keep on
pointing our fingers at smokers and even ridicule them when they say
they are about to quit. Non-smokers always have this attitude that they
are clean and that they totally hate smokers and consider them to be
some kind of disease spreaders. Do you think that a smoker doesn’t want
to quit smoking? I doubt there would be any smoker who doesn’t want to
quit, they all wanna quit, and it’s just that they are not strong enough
to try on their own. That’s the reason why they need your love and
support more than anything else.
Since the addiction of nicotine is much harder to kick than heroin,
cocaine and alcohol, smokers often fail in their attempt to quit
smoking. Nicotine works in the brain by activating dopamine which is a
neurotransmitter and is responsible for the normal functioning of the
central nervous system. Therefore when people begin to depend on
nicotine, it controls them; it affects their behavior and moods. The
addictive nature of Nicotine is that it is a stimulant and also a
depressant.
Therefore, if a smoker finds it difficult to quit, do not laugh at
him/her instead understand their situation and give a shoulder to lean
on. You don’t need to do much just believe in them, become their
activity partner, give them your trust, motivate and cheer them up when
they are on the brink of giving up. You can help your loved ones to quit
by being supportive and by lending an ear and listening to whatever they
have to share. The most important thing is accept them as they are,
encourage them but never force them to quit smoking.
You may also give presents like nicotine replacement products and
medicines to make their quitting easier. If you go for the medicines,
chantix by Pfizer which is also known as champix in European countries
is the best choice. It has been used by many people and is giving quite
remarkable results. Due to its effectiveness thousands of smokers are
able to quit smoking.
Chantix is not a nicotine replacement nor is addictive, it is a
prescription medicine approved by FDA for the treatment of anti-smoking
in adults. It works in the brain by undoing whatever nicotine had done.
It also diminishes the taste of cigarette i.e. even if a smoker smokes
after taking chantix he doesn’t feel the same taste or pleasure he used
to feel before. Further, it remarkably cuts down the cravings or the
urge to have cigarette.
So if you want your loved ones to quit smoking change your attitude and
buy chantix for them. You will remember this great act of yours with
fond memories in days to come. Isn’t it overwhelming to know that
because of you somebody could quit their bad habit? Your loved ones will
be thankful to you through out their life for saving them from
preventive death.

Chantix and Champix
This year varenicline (Chantix and Champix) is the new kid on the block.
Pfizer boasts that it aided 1 in 5 clinical trial users in quitting for
a year. But aside from Chantix/Champix use, a number of study design
factors may have heavily influenced outcome. More alarming, there's
mounting user concerns that Pfizer has failed to adequately warn smokers
about adverse events, including "frequent" risk of significant muscle
and joint pain (what Pfizer lists as "arthralgia, back pain, muscle
cramp, musculoskeletal pain, myalgia" - see page 14), without telling
users how frequently, or that symptoms may persist long after
varenicline use has ended.
http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=2301
Link to Pfizer's complete
list of
Chantix / Champix Adverse Events
http://www.pfizer.com/pfizer/download/uspi_chantix.pdf
But if the Chantix / Champix user makes it past the side-effects, they
truly will experience up to 60% of the dopamine output that nicotine
would have generated if sitting on the exact same acetylcholine
receptors. The trick with Chantix / Champix isn't in feeling comfortable
while using it but adjusting to living without it, as more than half of
clinical trial users who quit smoking for 3 months while using
varenicline relapsed within a year.
If you have a friend or loved one using Chantix or Champix there's
absolutely no reason, whether they continue using it or not, that they
cannot go the distance and succeed, so long as zero nicotine finds its
way back into their bloodstream. Key is relapse prevention. You may want
to send them the link to downloading Joel's free PDF book "Never Take
Another Puff" which can be downloaded at:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been reading about a new "stop smoking" drug called Champix (Chantix
in USA). It was just released a few weeks ago. I went to my doctor but
he didn't know enough about it and wants to research it first before
prescribing it.
I can't find much information about it on the internet other than
information put out by the manufacturers.
Has anybody heard about it or tried it?

A Different Way to Help Quitters Quit
Good News for Smokers
There’s good news for smokers this week with the launch of Champix™ in
Ireland. Champix, is the first new prescription aid to smoking cessation
treatment approved by the EMEA and U.S. Food and Drug Administration in
nearly a decade, and it is now available to Irish patients. Those who
are prescribed Champix will be offered the opportunity to enroll in a
behavioural modification programme called Life RewardsTM Support Plan at
no additional cost. The plan was developed by Pfizer with input from
smoking cessation experts.
“By launching Champix in Ireland to help people quit smoking, we hope to
take a positive step toward improving the health of smokers, their
families and friends, and society in general,” says Jay Cusack, Champix
Brand Manager. “Quitting smoking is challenging physiologically and
psychologically. Very often, smokers are very much on their own during
the difficult quitting process. To help people break free from the
powerful grip of smoking, we are offering Champix with a personalised
behaviour modification program called Life RewardsTM Support Plan. It is
our hope that this will help smokers achieve their goal of living
smoke-free.”
Decline in Smoking has been Reversed
According to the Office of Tobacco Control the overall prevalence of
cigarette smoking in Ireland is approximately 24%. There was a decline
in smoking prevalence after the smoke free legislation in March 2004,
however this decline has now been reversed. In particular there is a
rise in smoking prevalence among young women. 25% of the female
population smoke. There is also a reversal in the decline in smoking
among 15-18 year olds and 19-35 year olds generally. It is estimated
that 18% of 15-18 year olds smoke and 33% of 19-35 year olds. Half of
all smokers will die from tobacco related disease and of these 50% will
die prematurely. In Ireland 7,000 people die every year from tobacco
related diseases. Annually 1,500 people die from lung cancer. Smoking
causes 30% of all cancers, including 90% of lung cancers.
Four out of every 5 smokers wish they had never started. Champix offers
an important advance in smoking cessation. It is the first in a new
class of medicines called selective nicotinic acetylcholine receptor
partial agonists and it works by binding to the nicotinic receptors and
providing relief from the craving and withdrawal symptoms while also
reducing satisfaction and the rewarding effects of smoking.
A Death Every Eight Seconds
Smoking is the world’s leading preventable cause of premature death.
While many smokers would like to quit to prevent further damage to their
health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that less than 5%
of smokers trying to quit unaided remain abstinent at 1 year. It is
believed that most smokers continue to smoke not out of choice, but
because they are addicted to nicotine. Addiction to nicotine is a
chronic, relapsing medical condition. Worldwide, approximately 1.3
billion people currently smoke cigarettes. Approximately five million
people die of smoking-related diseases each year worldwide and the WHO
estimates that if current smoking patterns continue, the number of
people dying of smoking-related diseases globally will double by 2020 to
10 million a year. According to the WHO, every eight seconds a person
dies of a smoking-related disease (and almost as quickly someone else
takes up smoking for the first time).

Adverts | Blog | Friends I got the Champix and today was day 14 of the
tablets. I stopped smoking yesterday so I've almost completed Day 2 as a
non-smoker!! Craving are definitly a lot easier to handle and I think I
might actually succeed this time in staying off the cigs! Very annoying
though when I "forget" I'm not smoking and reach for cigarettes that
aren't there!! But hopefully that will pass soon.

MAKE SURE YOU GET A DPS CARD and you only pay max of 85 euro a month for
anything prescribed i.e 1st month almost free
I've benn off them now for 6 weeks which is about 6 weeks better than
any other attempt (23 years a smoker). Have tried Alan Carr clinic
twice, read the book, patches, gum etc and none worked for me. Don't
know if its the champix or just the fact that I know if this doesn't
work I haven't really got any options left thats keeping me going but
finally know what its like to be off them a while and it feels good

officially launced when I started it and you will still find it hard to
find a chemist that stocks it - they can order it in in a day or two.
Good luck if you try it.

Adverts | Blog | Friends Champix worked for me...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi All,
Stopped smoking Jan. 19th. while taking Champix. Felt great emotionally
- almost as if tranquillized. Physically, I didn't have any cravings,
but I was bloated for about two weeks: very unpleasant. I slept like a
baby, had wonderfully funny and quirky dreams and didn't gain weight.
I am still smoke and nicotine free and have discontinued Champix. I am
convinced that Champix helped me get started and that without it, I
would not have got this far. But...
...several side effects became too unpleasant. Serious one: I started
coughing up small amounts of blood, so after discussing it with the doc,
I simply halved the dose and everything was fine. I then started
becoming angry and aggressive and halved the dose again. Through all
this, I have had only a few terrible moments where I have felt so
tempted that I might have smoked had I a cigarette in hand - luckily I
didn't.
A week or so ago, I started shouting at a dog trainer (really shouting),
and I knew it was time to completely discontinue the tablets. I did it
slowly and have been fine. I am careful about what I eat and do not set
myself up for failure. I haven't smoked since Jan. 19th. and I feel
hopeful that I can stay the course, which has been made a lot easier by
starting with Champix.
Still, I would never take it for six, let alone nine months....

My brother is taking it & I'm going to start this week.I was always wary
of Zyban & this seems way better. My brother is late 40's, has been on
Champix for a month & said the cravings stopped after a matter of days.
He really doesn't want a smoke! There are no side effects that he notes
other than mild heart burn (which may be unrelated) Beat's cancer!

Well,
This Champix drug is now been given out free by the NHS in the UK from
today i believe. I am thinking of giving something a go real soon and
this looks like a good option. If anybody knows where to get it in Cork
please let me know (Or do it have to be prescribed by a doctor?)

Adverts | Blog | Friends You have to get a prescription from your doctor
for it. I've been using Champix and I'm off the cigarettes over six
weeks now. I didn't follow the instructions exactly! I started it in
January and was stopping and starting smoking until 15 April when I
finally stopped for good! Although soon after starting the drug I had
cut down to about 10 a day. I still get cravings but they are easier to
manage and I haven't even come close to lighting up since I quit for
good. And I started a diet the same day and have lost 9lb so far!!

Adverts | Blog | Friends Understandably, there's lots of excitement each
time a new quitting product arrives. But long-term smokers have lived
broken marketing promises for at least 25 years. Will Champix be
different?
Pfizer's press release boasts that 1 in 5 Champix users remained quit
for an entire year but, frankly, the design of Pfizer's 5 studies was
utterly horrible. They make it impossible to tell how much of the
one-year rate to attribute to Champix and how much to other factors such
as: (1) excluding hard to treat populations, (2) up to 25 provider
support and/or counseling contacts, contacts having their own efficacy
(possibly a record), and (3) allowing Champix users to use NRT products
following 3 months of Champix use, yet counting them as successful
Champix quitters. But then again, out in real world use ... who knows
how it'll fare.
For those interested here's two critical study design reviews:
http://whyquit.com/pr/082506.html
http://whyquit.com/pr/121606.html
The problem for those surviving adverse events and side-effects isn't in
being comfortable while on Champix (which really isn't too hard to do as
it puts out up to 60% of the dopamine that nicotine would have if
sitting on the exact same nicotinic receptor that varenicline now
occupies 24 hrs a day) but in adjusting to coming off of it and
successfully transiting the period of time which the brain needs to
down-regulate receptor counts. Keep in mind that more than half who
successfully completed three months of use relapsed to smoking within a
year.
Is Champix more effective than the nicotine gum, patch or lozenge? We
all certainly hope so but I'm not holding my breath. As shared in the
top link, a number of early nicotine gum studies, that also included
heavy counseling and/or support elements, generated one-year quitting
rates higher than Champix. But we've since learned that when nicotine
gum is used as a stand-alone over-the-counter product, its six month
(not 1 yr) quitting rate is a dismal 7%, with a substantial percentage
of that 7% (up to 6.7%) still hooked on the cure.
As for adverse events, this is not Zyban or Wellbutrin (bupropion),
where we were each told and knowingly accepted a 1 in 1,000 risk of
having a seizure. Significant Champix side effects are clobbering so
many users that it's nearly impossible not to hear their voices. Take a
look at this link:
http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=2301
If true, imagine significant muscle and joint pain for days or weeks
after Champix use has ended. I'm working with a couple of dozen Champix
users in helping prepare them to stay free once they come off of it.
I've encouraged all of them to read either Joel Spitzer's free book
"Never Take Another Puff" available at http://whyquit.com/joel/ or Allen
Carr's free book "Scandal" available at http://www.ciggyfree.com/SCANDAL.pdf
With or without Champix, yes you can! In the end there's just one rule
determining the outcome for all ... no nicotine today, Never Take
Another Puff, Dip or Chew!

Hi John,
Thanks for the great links.
Certainly, it was very difficult to find the low down on Champix as it's
called here in Denmark. I work as a translator and have good Internet
search skills without which I would not have found the information about
the medical trials. Even so, I had to lie to get the information: "Yes,
I am a doctor." or some such sentence that allowed me to get the
information. Loads of hard-to-understand stastistics and jargon not
known to the average joe or josephine. I mostly agree with your
assessment.
I am still smoke, pill and nicotine free. Almost five months --- soon.
Whether due to Champix or cessation, my body continues to behave in
unaccustomed ways. Would I still have taken Champix? Yes. Literally
armed with information, I could not have foreseen some of the
side-effects and would probably, had I known, have stayed on the initial
half dose.
The real medical trial is when the product hits the market.
Again, thanks for the links.

I am going into 9th week of Chantix. Have not smoked for 8 weeks. Very
satisfied so far, however does anyone know anything about withdrawal
from Chantix?
It concerns me Phizer has a hotline entitled "Chantix cravings."

Matt there is a website called thecancerblog.com and they talk about
tapering off of chantix. It may be helpful. This is day 3 for me and I

This is my fourth day of being a non smoker, thanks to Chantix. I have
smoked approx. 2 packs a day, for 30+ years, and I NEVER thought I would
be able to quit. For the first time I truly think I can do it. This time
with Chantix it is actually very easy. NO cravings! I have not had any
side effects, no nausea, nothing. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

I started chantix 1/2/07 and smoked my last cigarette 1/12/07. I smoked
for 18 years 1pack a day. I was very tired in the beginning but it has
gotten better and i am getting my energy back. I seriously think I was
so tired because I really was not sure what to do with myself since I
didnt have a cigarette to "motivate" or "reward" myself anymore when
doing daily tasks. It was just easier for me to lay around or take a
nap. I told myself that it was ok to be lazy for awhile, whatever it
takes to conquer this nasty habit. I am now alot more adjusted to not
smoking and realize that I can do things without having to smoke before
or after I do them. Good Luck

else having the same problems?
Yes, very tired and vivid dreams, along with general melancholy. I
started taking Chantix on January 8 to help nip a 30-year smokeless
tobacco addiction. It seems to work and work quite well, though the next
item on the agenda is getting off the Chantix. D'oh! Is anyone aware of
discontinuation syndrome associated with Chantix? Good luck to all and
fight the good fight.

I am on week 3 and day 1. I am still smoking. I see only a minor change
in how I feel to smoking. The cigarettes aren't as good as they were in
the past. But that is it. Also, I feel like I have quite cold turkey
again with no assistance from medicines. I am very irritable and I am
still smoking. I quit Chantrix for one weekend and I felt my normal self
again. Also while on it, my dreams have been chaotic. I remember
everyone of them like I was there. And I also feel sick too.

I have order Chantix through my prescripton plan and, thankfully they
pay all but $10. I went ahead and got it for $5 through the mail, just
have to wait 14 days for it. Here is my big concern. The side effects. I
hate taking medician and if I hear it has a bad side effect I wont even
try it. Like I herd this one may cause difficulty in breathing granted
it is not one of the main sie effects. This is my concern. I have been a
smoker for 29 years, started at the ripe old age of 13, to know now
then!!! My husband is a non smoker and wants me to quit. I smoke about a
1/2 pack a day. I don't smoke infront of him out of respect. So the only
thing I am hearing is tiredness and some nausea. I hope that is it for
me. And does the tiredness go away?

Purchased mine three days ago and the cost was $115.00 for the "Starter

I have been on Chantix and have not had a cigarette since 1/10/07. I
can't believe how easy it was. I had quit on the patch for 6.5 years and
it was pure hell. This is so easy. I do get nauseated in the morning but
it isn't anything that can't be handled. I am concerned about what
happens when I go off the Chantix. Has anybody weaned off the chantix
yet?

I have been using Chantix(called Champix in UK) for 5 days now to get
off nicotine gum addiction. On he first day the gum didn't seem to work
anymore so I stopped it straight away. Cravings are happening but they
are mild. Lets hope it's easy to get off Chantix as the gum never had
the same pleasure as smoking and being addicted to Chantix would be even
less fun. In the UK Champix is available on the NHS and costs only
Ł6.70.

I stopped smoking 12/25/06 and took my last Chantix on 1/14/07. It
wasn't a big deal for me but I'm sure everyone is different. I'm still
not smoking and I'm at the point where I really don't think about
it(smoking) much anymore.I feel I'm well on my way and confident I won't
smoke. Chantix is awesome. I'm extremely happy I started takig it and
think its really up to the individual whether or not it works.

dringing ALOT of fluid, drinking fruit juice, or munching on carrots
will help alot with the fatigue associated with quiting smoking. it will
safely keep your blood glucose up, and give you a little extra energy to
get through the first phase of quiting. it takes ONLY 3-4 days to FULLY
release the nicotine from your system...and about a week or two to get
over the fatigue

weaning you off, it's just cold turkey. I have been sleeping more and
more also, and tired all the time. I think the idea of Chantix is good,
but they should have coupled it with something for the nicotine
withdrawal. Would like to hear if anyone else had this happen with

Does anyone know if you get wathdrawal symptoms when you come off
Chantix or do you have to wean off slowly to avoid craving cigarettes?
It would be hard to go through withdrawal yet again.

I'm thinking of trying Chantix to stop smoking. I did try Zyban but
ended up having a major panic attack as a side effect (thought I was
having a heart attack!). Has anyone experienced any increased anxiety
from taking Chantix?

I am day 10 of Chantix and on my third day of not smoking. I was a 20-22
a smoker for approximately 26 years (started at 16 and I am now 38). On
effectiveness, I think Chantix is a miracle. With a biochem background,
I do understand how it works, and do understand that it dulls the
craving because it stimulates nicotine receptors all the while, but even
knowing this I cannot help think this is far and away the most effective
quit aid I have ever tried.
On day 3 of not smoking, I firmly think of myself now as a non-smoker.
And I do want to point out I think you do have to *want* to quit.
Cravings still come and go, but as early as day one of my quit the
majority of them feel as if they are wrapped in cotton -- vague,
slightly nagging, all overcome with a fairly easy "no, I don't smoke"
reminder to myself, and that's it. I have experienced *none* of that
I'm-going-to-poke-someone's-ey e-out irritable of cold turkey/NRT quits
I have tried and I have had zero side effects so far from the Chantix.
As for the person who asked about anxiety: Quite frankly, Chantix has
made feel extremely mellow and serene, feels almost as if I've taken a
valium or a percocet or something. This is, no doubt, from the constant
low grade nictotinic receptor stimulation. This raises some concern on
my part about withdrawing off of Chantix but, in my opinion, it can come
nowhere near the negatives of smoking or withdrawing off the *habit* of
smoking.
And for the record, I did not go into this quit all gung ho and merry
and *planning* to quit. My dr. just offered up the prescription when I
was there about something else and I went ahead and filled it and
figured I would at least try it, according to the directions. Because
even though I had no direct plan to quit, I'm a smoker: of course I
always want to quit. And I can say that from 11 days ago, with no
specific plan to quit anytime soon, to 10 days ago starting my first
pill, to 3 days ago having my last cigarette... I'm just stunned.

Cathy
Actually I have experienced quite the opposite. First I’m on my 5th
week of Chantix and my 3rd week on being a non-smoker. Also I have a
mild anxiety disorder. I’ve never taken any meds for my anxiety
because normally I am able to handle the 3 to 4 minor anxiety attacks I
have daily.
However, anxiety was one of the main concerns I had when I went to see
my Dr. about Chantix. See, the last several times I tried quitting
(using the patch) I would have full blown panic attacks several times a
day. In the end I would give up because between the withdrawal and the
panic attacks I would opt for a nicotine addiction every time. My doctor
guessed that the reason for the panic attacks was because nicotine is a
stimulant and with the patch I was getting a steady dose 24 hours a day
as opposed to smoking which was only at certain times through out the
day.
Let me tell you…. Not only have I not had any panic attacks while
taking Chantix, my anxiety attacks have gone from 3 to 4 a day to 3 to 4
a week. I don’t know why they have reduced. Maybe my anxiety is linked
to the nicotine, maybe it’s part of the mellowing effect the Chanix
has, I don’t know. All I can tell you is do not let your fear of
anxiety deter you from this medication. Talk to your Dr about it, and
tell him what you’ve experienced in the past and let him judge it.
Since these Dr’s they know a little about this stuff ya know ;^)
Also, just an FYI I took Welbutrin about a year ago to try and quit and
had a horrible panic attack that was so bad I will never touch the stuff
again. I’m not sure what triggered it with that med, and I never
discussed it with my Dr. I just know that Welbutrin/Zyban is NOT for me.
Good Luck!!!

I just started taking it, but my sister is on it and she also complained
of being tired, and sometimes extra thirsty. I think to compensate for
being tired, drink LOTs of liquids, good liquids that are good for you
such as vitamin water, regular water, juice, ect. keeping your body
hydrated keeps you going, even more so then coffee. I'm looking forward
to feeling the effects of chantix in a few days. Hopefully I can quit
this nasty habit.
