Flush syringes are indicated for use in the flushing of indwelling intravenous (IV) access devices. The practice of flushing ensures and maintains catheter patency and helps prevent the mixing of incompatible drugs. Prefilled flush syringes are intended to serve the needs of hospital and alternate site customers requiring a safe, accurate, and convenient flushing option.

Many thousands of IV catheter line flushes are performed daily by hospitals and home health providers. Historical practice norms would require that a health care professional draw fluids, either 0.9% sodium chloride (saline) or heparin, into an empty syringe prior to performing the procedure. Although the procedure and the solutions used are largely standardized, the use of prefilled syringes provides distinct and very important advantages to hospital pharmacists and nurses:

  • Significant Time Savings - Eliminates the need to manually assemble the components and draw up fluid into the syringe.
Limited healthcare provider resources have necessitated innovative improvements in efficiency. Consequently, ready-to-administer flush syringes substantially reduce the time required to perform the procedure by approximately 80%.
  • Safety and Confidence - Alleviates the concern of solution contamination, or errors in preparation or labeling

Use of prefilled flush syringes decreases the need for manipulation of single dose and multiple-dose vials, a multiple step handling process involving drawing solution into syringes from larger source containers. This manual method has resulted in cross contamination, and there are documented outbreaks of hepatitis C, staph and various bacteria cases.

In contrast, prefilled flush syringes provide a safe, easy, ready-to-administer product. Manufacturer bar coding, color-coding, expiration date assignment and labeling greatly assist in the identification of syringe contents and help prevent mix-ups with other syringes used in the clinical setting. Manufactured syringes also are prepared in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment, conditions required by FDA for high quality sterile product preparation.
